How to get to know your users (and avoid common pitfalls of product roadmapping)

This article is part 2 of a series. Read our original post here.

Building an exceptional product experience really depends on how well you know your users - but understanding those users can seem like a daunting task for product teams with limited resources.

In our webinar with Product Hunt, Sprig CEO and Founder Ryan Glasgow talked about his own experiences with building products and trying to understand user behavior. Working at Weebly as a product manager, Ryan realized that there were bugs and edge cases in the newest version of their iOS app.

To understand the exact frustrations of users and resolve these issues, Ryan launched an in-product survey: “It turned out to be a really powerful way to quickly and instantly understand exactly what was working, but also where and how exactly that mobile app could be strengthened,” said Ryan.

“It ended up being an award-winning product, but only once we were able to really listen to that user feedback and resolve those issues.”

As covered in the webinar, here are 5 methods to get to know your users and understand what they think about your product:

Go beyond NPS: Understand users in real-time

Net Promoter Score (NPS) has gained significant popularity as a customer loyalty metric over the years. While it has become a widely adopted tool, the tool doesn’t offer a complete picture of user behavior.

With Sprig’s in-product Surveys, product teams can target specific subsets of users based on the actions they take in your product. On average, product teams get a 30% response rate so you can be assured that you’ll get to insights more quickly.

Understand users: See the product from their perspective

We recently expanded our offering to include Replays where you can record targeted session clips of specific users’ product experiences. This feature enables you to see how your users actually experience the product.

With Replays, you can:

  • Trigger Replays with Sprig’s advanced user events/attributes targeting.
  • Launch standalone Replays or add one onto an in-product Survey to capture users’ sessions and sentiment.
  • Customize recording length up to 5 minutes before and after the Replay triggers.

Get user insights with speed and accuracy

Product managers often skip getting insights because they think that they don’t have time. But Sprig AI makes it easier to get actual product recommendations quickly.

Sprig AI, now powered by GPT, turns open-text Survey feedback into actionable product recommendations. With Sprig AI, product teams can get faster and more detailed product recommendations from Sprig Surveys.

Learn from the best product leaders

If you’re struggling to get started with user insights, it's important to look at what other product leaders are doing to understand users and fix potential issues with their product - that’s why we launched Template Gallery.

Whether you want to learn how to iterate on learnings or improve conversion rates, we have a template for almost every scenario designed by product experts like Lenny Rachitsky, Packy McCormick, and many others. The templates provide a step-by-step guide on how to use Sprig to understand users.

Optimize user insights with integrations

Sprig’s integrations with numerous partners, including Amplitude, LaunchDarkly, Mixpanel and Figma, allow product managers to get an even deeper understanding of users.

For example, with our latest integration with Mixpanel and LaunchDarkly, product teams can now quickly identify areas for improvement, measure the impact of changes, and confidently iterate to create better product experiences.
